Gidget
City Lit is a 99-seat non-equity theater with limited resources. Having grown up in Santa Monica CA myself, I felt that the most important visual image to create for Gidget was the sense of vast open space at the beach, and the constant movement of the water. How do you make an ocean in a small space with no money? I used layered translucent fabric banners, and then layered them, to give a sense of infinite depth. It gave us lots of good scrimmy kinds of lighting possibilities. Also, we had to make our own surfboards, because the real ones would have been 9 feet tall and totally unwieldy. I think that actually helped to create a unified style, and to balance the colors well.
