Henry IV, Part 2
The producers decided to stage this play in what is called 'alley staging', where the audience sits
on either side of the playing stage. So, nothing can go on the stage to obstruct the audience's view, leaving the side walls and the floor only for scenic opportunities, and one of those walls is the audience egress. We also needed to accommodate many different locations, including a forest, a castle, and a tavern, among others. We decided to surround the audience with patterned screens, some of which were tracked, to imply the feelings of being closed in, or separated from something, and conversely opening and revealing. We added levels to provide spatial interest and staging possibilities, and covered the walls and ceiling in an aggressive texture that was kind of stony and painterly at the same time.
