The Kiss of the Spiderwoman
Bailiwick Rep. was a big corner stage in an old brick industrial building. To make the hard, cold environment of a South American prison, we took down the temporary walls to expose the old brick walls, which surrounded the audience as well. We added lots of big industrial grates, a wall of openings which referenced a kind of Kafka-esque endless hallway/cell block, and built a cell on wheels which moved around for the dance numbers and had the warden's office on the other side. We added sort of a grand staircase so that when the Spiderwoman danced her big Hollywood-type numbers it made perfect sense from a choreography point of view, though she never left the prison environment. This show won a fistfull of Jeff awards and we are very proud of it.
