Phase 1:

Every project is unique
Every project is unique and we can approach it in a way that makes the most sense to clients and designers. Generally, though, we work one step at a time in the following way.

After an initial meeting with clients, there is an agreement to do preliminary designs. These are sketches and are meant to guide us in the right direction and rule out wrong turns. A fee is agreed on for this part of the process, and general cost estimates for the whole project may be included. Here are some preliminary
drawings for curtains in the Evanston SPACE.

Phase 2:

Various options are explored
We didn't end up using the big ancient musician on the exterior of the building, but we did do the big question mark and the curtains.

Phase 3:

The design idea is chosen
After a design idea is chosen, we go on to final designs. This also can take many forms, but it should be clear and detailed enough to bring to whovever gives final approval for the project, and to get prices from fabricators. A final price, as well as other contractual issues such as installation deadlines are negotiated now, with the final designs in hand.

For the interactive mural in the Early Childhood Center, which we completed in September of 2008, the final designs included a rendering, a white model to show the 3-D details, and for good measure, we taped out the design on site so everyone could get a feel for the actual scale.

Phase 4:

The idea becomes reality
Finally, after a deposit is paid, which will probably be for half the total cost, work begins. Small changes continue to be made, overseen by the designer, as designers and fabricators adjust to the realities of the project. We keep in close contact with the clients throughout the fabrication and installation process. If there are other renovations or building projects going on at the site, we will coordinate closely with other contractors so as not to get in each other's way and to all do our best work.

Finally, when work is finished to everyone's satisfaction, the final payments are made, photographs are taken and it is time to celebrate.
